The Esgueva River enters the province of Valladolid from the east, and crosses it until it joins the Pisuerga River in the very city of Valladolid. It is a small river with a narrow, fertile valley, between plateaus. Its villages tend to be close to the river, linked by a road that runs parallel to it.
The Esgueva River valley widens near the village of Villafuerte, giving rise to the most subtle tones of colour to be found on the Castilian plateau. The village has an impressive fortress which overlooks the serene cornfields and the labyrinth of tracks and footpaths that criss-cross quiet woodlands of holm oak and pine.
Villafuerte is not to be missed on the Valladolid Castles Route. Its castle, belonging to the Friends of Castles Association, is being painstakingly restored and is open to visitors all year round. It is a Gothic construction from the 15th century, with an outstanding, slim keep. La Santisima Trinidad Parish Church, once dedicated to San Miguel, is Romanesque, 12th century. The coffering which covered its central nave was restored and placed in Pimentel Palace.
Its strategic location (37 km from Valladolid, 25 km from Peñafiel and 37 km from Palencia) means visitors can go on many enchanting routes that will enhance both the body and soul:
Religious Art Route: - Aforementioned Villafuerte Romanesque Church - Amusquillo (3 km away): with a very valuable Renaissance altarpiece.
- Olivares de Duero (15 km): Gothic church with a Renaissance gem: its altarpiece.
- Peñafiel (25 km): Peñafiel (25 km) has a religious art museum in its Santa María church, and a good example of Mudejar architecture in its San Pablo church.
- Santa María de Valbuena Monastery (15 km): permanent home to the Ages of Man exhibition.
Castles Route: Villafuerte (15th century), Canillas de Esgueva (15th century remains ), Encinas (12th century), Curiel (10th century remains) and Peñafiel (Prince Don Juan Manuel ordered it built in the 15th century).
Duero Riverbank Route: Regional wineries and restaurants where you can sample "lechazo" (baby lamb) washed down with excellent local wines.
